Restoration Hardware, which trades under the name RH, is an American home-furnishings company headquartered in Corte Madera, California. It sells furniture, lighting, textiles, bathware, décor and outdoor and garden products, positioned at the luxury end of the home market and presented largely through large "Gallery" stores and substantial source books. The company is publicly traded. The company was founded in 1979 by Stephen Gordon in Eureka, California. The story commonly told is that, while restoring a Victorian house, Gordon found it difficult to source good-quality hardware and fixtures, and started a business to supply them — hence the name Restoration Hardware. From these origins selling hardware and fittings, the company expanded over time into a broad home-furnishings retailer. Over the following decades Restoration Hardware shifted its positioning from eclectic hardware and accessories toward higher-end furniture and home furnishings, eventually rebranding around the initials RH. It became known for large-format gallery stores, often in landmark buildings, and for presenting its ranges through heavy catalogues, or "source books," organised into collections such as RH Interiors, RH Modern and RH Outdoor. RH became a publicly traded company through an initial public offering in 2012, and its stock trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker RH. The company has expanded beyond its core retail into related areas including hospitality and design services, while continuing to centre its business on home furnishings. RH's products are aimed at the residential luxury market and are sold through its galleries, source books and website, primarily in North America with some international expansion. As a publicly traded American home-furnishings company that grew from a hardware store into a luxury furniture retailer, RH occupies the upper end of the home market.
