About
Philips lighting is a line of lighting products with roots in the Dutch company Philips, one of the original electric-lighting manufacturers. Today the lighting business operates as a separate company, Signify, which produces and sells lighting under the Philips brand under licence. The range spans consumer lighting — including the Philips Hue connected-lighting system — as well as professional and architectural lighting, and the business is based in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. Philips itself was founded in 1891 in Eindhoven, beginning with an incandescent-lamp factory, and lighting was among its earliest activities. Over more than a century the company became a major global lighting manufacturer alongside its other businesses, before deciding to separate lighting into a standalone company. The lighting division was spun off from Philips in 2016 through an initial public offering, becoming an independent company listed on the Euronext Amsterdam stock exchange, initially under the name Philips Lighting. In March 2018 the company announced it would change its name to Signify, which took effect on 16 May 2018. Signify continues to produce and sell lighting under the Philips brand through a long-term licensing arrangement. The renaming coincided with a strategic focus on connected and energy-efficient lighting. The Philips Hue system, a range of connected LED lighting controllable through apps and smart-home systems, became one of the better-known products in the smart-home lighting segment, alongside the company's wider portfolio of lamps, luminaires and professional lighting systems. Philips-branded lighting is used in homes, offices, public spaces and architectural and outdoor applications, and is sold through retailers, professional channels and online internationally. As a lighting line with a long heritage in Philips, now produced by Signify, it spans consumer smart lighting and professional lighting systems rather than furniture as such.
