Moooi is a Dutch design company based in Breda, in the Netherlands, that produces furniture, lighting and accessories with a distinctive, design-led and often theatrical character. It works with a wide range of international designers and is known for statement pieces — particularly decorative lighting — aimed at residential, hospitality and contract interiors. The company was founded in 2001 by the designer Marcel Wanders and the entrepreneur Casper Vissers. According to the company, the name is a play on the Dutch word "mooi," meaning beautiful, with an additional letter added. Wanders provided much of the creative direction while Vissers led the business side in the early years, and the company presented its work internationally from the outset, including at the Salone del Mobile in Milan. Ownership shifted over the company's history. The Italian furniture company B&B Italia acquired a stake of around half of Moooi in 2006, which it held until the founders bought back the remaining shares, regaining full control of the company by 2015. Casper Vissers later stepped down from his role, and the company has continued under the Moooi name as a design-focused business. Moooi's identity rests on collaborations with external designers and on pieces that are often large in scale or visually expressive. Among its well-known products are the Random Light, a pendant lamp with a cocoon-like shell, the Smoke chair by Maarten Baas — a burnt-and-coated wooden chair — and the Raimond pendant lamp, alongside a broad catalogue of lighting, seating, tables and rugs. Statement decorative lighting is an especially prominent part of its range. Moooi's products are used in residential, hospitality and commercial interiors and are sold internationally through design retailers, showrooms and online channels. As a Dutch design house built around designer collaboration and expressive pieces, Moooi occupies the design-led end of the contemporary furniture and lighting market.
