Joybird was founded in 2014 by a group of founders including Alex Del Toro, Andres Hinostroza, Joshua Stellin and Christopher Stormer. It is headquartered in the Los Angeles area, in Commerce, California, with upholstery production carried out in Tijuana, Mexico. The company built its business around an online, made-to-order model rather than traditional retail showrooms, targeting customers looking for customisable contemporary furniture delivered directly to the home. The brand is identified with a mid-century modern aesthetic and with customisation: buyers can typically choose from a wide range of upholstery fabrics and colours and, for some pieces, different configurations and leg finishes, with items then made to order.
