The company operates a chain of retail stores across the United States and Canada, along with an e-commerce business and a long-running catalogue operation. Its product range spans living, dining and bedroom furniture, kitchen and tabletop goods, textiles, lighting, outdoor furniture and home accessories, making it one of the more recognisable mid-range home furniture and home furnishings retailers in North America. The company was founded in 1962 by Gordon Segal and Carole Segal, a married couple who opened the first store on 7 December of that year in the Old Town neighbourhood of Chicago, Illinois. The space, on North Wells Street, occupied part of a former elevator factory. According to company accounts, the Segals were inspired by inexpensive but well-designed European household goods they had encountered while travelling, and they sought to bring similar products to American shoppers. The store's name came from a practical detail of its early days: merchandise arrived packed in crates and barrels, which the founders turned over and used as improvised display fixtures. From a single Chicago location, the business grew into a national retailer over the following decades, reaching roughly 100 locations by the early 2000s. The company's headquarters is in Northbrook, Illinois, a suburb in the Chicago metropolitan area. Ownership shifted from the founding family to a German parent company in stages. In 1998, Crate & Barrel sold a majority stake to the Otto Group, a Hamburg-based retail and mail-order group, a transaction that gave the brand additional financing for expansion and access to the parent's catalogue and logistics expertise. The Otto Group became the sole owner of Crate & Barrel in 2011. The company has continued to operate under the Crate & Barrel name and brand identity following the acquisition. Crate & Barrel is the flagship brand of a small family of related home furnishings businesses. CB2, launched in 2000, is a sister brand aimed at younger buyers with a more design-forward and trend-driven aesthetic. Crate & Kids, introduced in 2018, focuses on furniture and goods for children's rooms; it succeeded The Land of Nod, a children's brand that Crate & Barrel had acquired in 2001 and later rebranded. The group also added Hudson Grace, a home and entertaining brand, in 2019.
