It was founded in 1997 by John Christakos, Maurice Blanks and Charlie Lazor, who had met as students at Williams College and developed the idea of a design venture during a trip across Asia in the late 1980s. Two of the founders trained as architects and one as a sculptor, and the company began in a small Minneapolis workspace. The founders have described their original motivation as a wish for well-designed, modern furniture for their own first homes, framed around a goal of bringing good design to as many people as possible. The Strut Table uses a sculptural powder-coated steel base paired with an engineered-wood top and is offered in several formats, including dining, console, coffee and side-table versions.
