Bene GmbH is an Austrian office furniture manufacturer based in Waidhofen an der Ybbs in Lower Austria. The company designs, develops and produces workplace furniture for corporate and contract markets, and presents itself internationally as a specialist in office design and furnishing. Development, design, production, consulting and sales are concentrated at the Waidhofen an der Ybbs site, which serves as both headquarters and main production facility for the Bene Group. The company's history is long and is reflected in its own tagline, "Inspiring offices since 1790." The business began as a small joinery, or carpentry workshop, established by Michael Bene in Waidhofen an der Ybbs, and remained a woodworking operation for much of its early existence. A separate strand of the family business, founded by Karl Bene in Vienna in 1929, produced office supplies such as wooden letter trays and filing accessories. The transition that defines the modern company came in 1951, when Bene started industrial-scale production of office furniture. International expansion followed from the 1980s, and in 1989 production was consolidated at the present headquarters in Waidhofen an der Ybbs. The founding year is generally given as 1790, the origin date the company itself uses, while 1951 marks the start of the office furniture business specifically. Ownership has changed several times. The firm operated as a joint-stock company, Bene AG, and was listed on the Vienna Stock Exchange in 2006. After financial difficulties, it was acquired in June 2015 by a group of Austrian investors and was delisted from the exchange later that year. Today Bene GmbH is owned by BGO Holding GmbH of Vienna, which is held in equal halves by Austro Holding GmbH, associated with investor Erhard F. Grossnigg, and Bartenstein Holding GmbH, associated with Martin Bartenstein. Under this ownership the company returned to profitability, and the wider group later added other office furniture brands, including hali and Svoboda. Bene's product approach centres on complete office systems rather than single items, covering desking, storage, seating, room systems and accessories for different zones of the workplace. A recurring theme is spatial organisation: the company offers room-structuring partitions, free-standing modular elements and room-in-room solutions that create defined areas within open-plan floors. Its acoustic meeting boxes and phone booths combine sound insulation, integrated ventilation and LED lighting, functioning as enclosed spaces for calls, focused work or small meetings without permanent construction. Among its better-known products is the PARCS collection, developed with the London design studio PearsonLloyd and launched during Vienna Design Week in 2009. PARCS is a modular range intended to furnish informal meeting and lounge areas separate from conventional desks, and it includes elements such as the Causeway benches, the semi-private Toguna meeting space and the Wing booth. In desking, the Studio Workbench is a multifunctional bench system expandable to as many as eight workstations, while the Basic Workbench provides a shared workspace for two or more people with integrated privacy screens. The POINTS system provides a free-standing, modular alternative to fixed interior construction. An earlier furnishing programme, C5, received the Austrian State Prize for Design in 1988. As Austrian furniture aimed at the contract sector, Bene products are typically specified for corporate offices, headquarters fit-outs and other professional environments rather than sold as individual consumer pieces. The company works with architects and office planners and supports them with planning services and configurators that visualise its furniture in three dimensions. Its positioning as a maker of office and workplace furniture spans organisations ranging from small offices to multinational corporations, distributed through an international network of showrooms and partners. The combination of in-house design, large-scale Austrian production and system-based furnishing concepts characterises the brand's place in the European commercial furniture market.
