Artemide is an Italian lighting manufacturer based in Pregnana Milanese, in the Milan metropolitan area. The company designs and produces both decorative lighting for residential interiors and architectural lighting for commercial, office and outdoor settings. Its catalogue spans table, floor, suspension and wall lamps as well as engineered systems for building and public-space installations. Artemide is frequently cited as a reference point for Italian lighting and "Made in Italy" design, in large part because of its long record of collaborations with architects and product designers. The company was founded in 1960 by Ernesto Gismondi, an aerospace engineer, together with the architect Sergio Mazza. Perhaps the most commercially recognisable Artemide product is the Tolomeo lamp, designed by Michele De Lucchi and Giancarlo Fassina. Sources date its design to 1986 and its market launch to 1987, and it won the Compasso d'Oro in 1989. The Tolomeo uses a spring-balanced arm system that lets the user adjust height and angle with one hand, and it has since been produced in numerous variants for desks, floors, walls and contract environments. Later designs include the Nur suspension lamp, designed by Ernesto Gismondi in 2003. Artemide products are used across multiple markets, including private homes, offices and workspaces, hospitality and retail interiors, and architectural and outdoor projects. The company's work is also represented in museum collections: several of its lamps are held by institutions including the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
